Description:

While speech-language pathologists are not the primary determiner of one's capacity to make healthcare decisions, they do assist care teams with such determinations.  In this course, clinical decision-making capacity, the process of informed consent, and health literacy will be reviewed.  Additional topics surrounding ethical considerations will be discussed, including: principles of ethics, dignity of risk, and ethical obligations that expand our moral lens.

Learner Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the Principlist Paradigm, its shortcomings, and (3) additional ethical obligations healthcare providers should consider.
  2. Describe the (4) abilities that comprise decision-making capacity and how this is assessed.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Askren is a staff speech-language pathologist at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System.  She serves a comprehensive patient population and is an integral member of their ALS Care Team Center of Excellence; additionally, she serves on the medical center's Ethics Committee.  She received her Master's degree at San Diego State University and earned her clinical doctorate in medical speech-language pathology at the University of Pittsburgh.  In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Askren teaches at the graduate level for West Virginia University's Speech-Language Pathology program in the School of Medicine.  She is published on the topics of ethics & considerations at end-of-life and has been invited to speak nationally.  Among her many professional interests, she especially enjoys clinical education.  Dr. Askren is a member of the ANCDS Communication Committee.
